A Preferred Wedding Photographer at Scrivelsby Walled Garden

We are Fineshade Studios, a husband-and-wife wedding photography and film team, and Scrivelsby Walled Garden has become one of our very favourite places to work. Having shot a number of weddings here now, we’re proud to be on the venue’s list of preferred suppliers - a photography and videography team the Scrivelsby team trust to look after their couples. There’s something about this place. Tucked into the Lincolnshire Wolds near Horncastle, behind a 250-year-old wall, is a garden that feels like a secret - pristine lawns, wildflowers climbing the old brickwork, a wishing well at its heart, and three giant tipis glowing against the evening sky. It’s romantic, it’s a little wild, and it photographs beautifully in every season.

Why Scrivelsby Walled Garden is One of Lincolnshire’s Most Magical Wedding Venues

Scrivelsby Walled Garden sits on the historic Scrivelsby Estate, a few minutes from Horncastle and surrounded by the rolling countryside of the Lincolnshire Wolds. Enclosed by a centuries-old wall with a gated entrance, the garden has a sense of being entirely its own world — the moment your guests step through the gate, the outside falls away. The heart of the day is the collection of three majestic giant tipis, with a cosy “snug” tipi for softer moments — Chesterfield sofas, a fire pit, and the kind of warm, flickering light that we love to shoot into as the evening draws in. With space for up to 150 guests to dine and a fully staffed on-site bar spilling out to an outdoor fire pit, it’s a venue built for celebration. For the ceremony itself, couples have a wonderful choice: the charming Laurels stretch tent is licensed for civil ceremonies for up to 120 guests, or you can walk to St Benedict’s — Scrivelsby’s own estate church — for a traditional religious service. That short walk through the estate, in the moments after a church ceremony, gives us some of the most joyful, unguarded photographs of the whole day.

Married on the Estate of the King’s Champion

Part of what makes Scrivelsby so special is the history you’re standing in. The Scrivelsby Estate has been home to the Dymoke family since the time of William the Conqueror, and the Dymokes hold one of the most extraordinary hereditary offices in the country: the King’s Champion. For centuries, the Champion’s role was to ride in full armour into the coronation banquet at Westminster Hall and challenge anyone who dared dispute the monarch’s right to the throne. The tradition was last performed in full at the coronation of George IV in 1821 - and the family’s connection to the Crown continues to this day: Francis Dymoke carried the Royal Standard at the Coronation of King Charles III in 2023. It’s not every wedding venue where you can say your celebration took place on the ancestral estate of the King’s Champion. For us, it adds a quiet sense of occasion to the whole day - a thread of real English history running underneath all the confetti and the dancing.

One of the joys of shooting here so often is watching couples make the space entirely their own - no two Scrivelsby weddings look the same. Take a look through the gallery below.

A summer celebration in the garden. A sun-drenched day of confetti on the lawns, golden-hour portraits against the old wall, and dancing in the tipis long after dark.

Photographing a Wedding at Scrivelsby Walled Garden

Every venue asks something slightly different of a photographer, and Scrivelsby rewards one who pays attention to light and texture. The walled garden as a backdrop. The old brick, the climbing florals, the wishing well - the garden gives us layers and depth that most venues simply don’t have. We use the wall’s texture and the natural framing of the garden to create portraits that feel timeless rather than trend-led.

Golden hour on the lawns. As the sun drops behind the wall, the whole garden softens into that warm, diffused light we love. We’ll usually steal you away for ten quiet minutes at golden hour - it’s often where the most romantic images of the day happen.

Into the tipis as the light fades. The tipis and the snug, with their fire pits and low, glowing light, are made for atmospheric evening photography. This is where a documentary approach really earns its keep - the candid laughter, the first dance, the firepit nightcaps.

A day covered by two. As a husband-and-wife team shooting both photography and film, we cover your day from two perspectives at once - which means nothing is missed, and your film and photographs share exactly the same natural, editorial aesthetic.

Wedding Films at Scrivelsby Walled Garden

Alongside our photography, we create cinematic wedding films at Scrivelsby. There’s a particular magic to hearing the day again - the speeches, the vows in St Benedict’s or the Laurels tent, the music drifting across the garden at dusk. Many of our Scrivelsby couples choose both photography and film together, and because we shoot them side by side, the two tell one seamless story.
